Episode 48: Boundaries, Down Time, and Getting Off The Phone

May 29, 2012

(In the words of co-host Bruce Barber as excerpted from the RLSG website)

This week’s editorial meeting for the RLSG was recorded just before Mother’s day, so OF COURSE we met at chocolate shop!

Big thanks to Jane Tamarkin, Danyel Aversenti, Susan Campbell, and Harlan Brothers for joining the conversation – and to Christian, Fritz, and everyone at the AMAZING Chocopologie in New Haven for hosting us.

According to her Facebook page, Jane Tamarkin is a “…teacher, actor, daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt [and] friend [who likes to] sing, dance, [and] go out to lunch.”

Jane is also a Co-producing Director for Theatre 4.

Danyel Aversenti is the founder and CEO of Our Empty Space, allowing ownders of empty city-spaces (mainly storefronts) to showcase their empty space to persons within their community for use as a temporary venue.

Our Empty Space was launched in May 2011 with one goal: Fill all the empty storefronts lining the city streets of New Haven, and provide retailers, artists and restaurateurs the opportunity to test the New Haven market or their concept without a long-term lease-commitment; moreover, each of our clients’ stores are hosted under the guise of Our Empty Space.

Susan Campbell just quit her job as a columnist at the Hartford Courant, where her work had been recognized by the National Women’s Political Caucus, New England Associated Press News Executives, the Society for Professional Journalists, the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors, the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, and the Sunday Magazine Editors Association. (Her column about the shootings at lottery headquarters in March 1998 was part of The Courant’s Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage.)

She’s the mother of two adult sons, and the grandmother of seven, she has a bachelor’s degree from University of Maryland, and a master’s degree from Hartford Seminary.

As an inventor, Harlan Brothers‘ successful designs run the technological gamut from the encryption-based Event Verification System to the Bathtub Buddy water alarm. He is also the developer of the iKandl birthday app for iPhone. As a mathematician and researcher, he has published numerous journal articles related to number theory and the fractal geometry of music.

As a musician, he composes, performs, and records in a wide range of genres. Harlan’s experience as a Director of Technology, technical and design consultant, researcher, educator, and creative artist gives him a unique and vigorous cross-disciplinary background as a problem solver and creative thinker.

We talked about about Step… children… grandchildren… and parents… boundaries when you give someone your number, and getting some good old fashioned down time!
