The Second Empire Style by Christine G. H. Franck
We are pleased to link to Christine G.H. Franck’s website, where she has a great list of historic American house styles illustrated by her own sketches, as shown here.
An excerpt from the Second Empire Style post: “One building element used widely during this period, the Mansard roof, would come to define the Second Empire style in America. François Mansart was French architect during the 17th century who revived these steeply pitched roofs from their earlier use during the French Renaissance. Though not invented by him, this roof type was so associated with Mansart it came to be called un toit à la mansarde, or Mansard roof.”

Thanks for sharing this Duo!
Hi Duo,
Thanks for including me with others to read the article & check the photos. As you well know, residential design is frought with problems not the least of which is the style name etc. As an architect I found the most difficult problem was dealing with the difference of opinions between owners, notwithstanding their ideas of style. One time I was designing a residence for couple building a house in Woodbridge and after several arguments about the design they split, and she left and drove to California. This was during construction, would you believe. Anyhow, thanks again and keep up the good work.
Allan
