30 of 40

A robin runs up to me, stares, angrily.

Predawn, millions of chirps abound, and it’s 27F.

Things that popped at 50F grow, but that’s not much today.

It’s March, in New England. It’s too late to be early, but it’s late to be so cold and bitter. Tomorrow is April 1. My Lent is 3/4 done. The 3rd quarter of the 40 days is a pivot, not because of calendar or season, but because, like the robin, things were just not right.

We want, desperately to know, really know, that this late cold is our fault. We are rolling back Climate Change Law. We used coal, for God’s sake! I have to drive my car 200 miles today.

So the world is a little colder than it should be after a month or two warmer than it should be. Inconsistency is very problematic.

There is no patience, let alone acceptance: it’s “too” dammit! But this 3rd quarter, for me, has been what it should be, and could not avoid. Harvesting the things that endorse change after a couple of quarters of consistency – and giving me the old tools of survival.

It’s the oddness of the Equinox we just had: we should know that every blessed day is different than before and hence. But we do not. We, I, want a mantra, a constant, a consistency that only happens at the Solstice or the Equinox when max and median are writ large.

No, we are the robin: sincerely upset, misunderstanding, assuming, ready. Even in Lent, the waiting is for an assumption: I hope I outgrow that…

Well, you’re presence interrupted the Robin’s pre-dawn foraging, dammit!
Anthropomorphism; know, resist, banish from brain!
American Robins are year-round residents here in CT, contrary to popular lore. In winter and late spring, they survive mostly on berries, but ferret out insects under leaf litter. With the occasional thaw, they will be seen on lawns in their usual mode, listening for worms.
May a giant Robin show up at dinner and stand between you, Liz and the buffet.
