It is the exhausting time of the year, after an exhausting time of the new century. We were sick – with fear or with COVID – then we were infected with a Home Fever that warped these last two years into a Housing Boom Frenzy. Terrified of losing out of the Perfect Home after sequestration or never finding a new place or just completely unsure of what was worth what (let alone what cost what) the lunacy of impulse purchasing may, finally be abating in 2024.

Or not.

But those who have dealt with homes and building and architecture have seen these manic/depressive mood swings in the most volatile of markets for the last two generations. Like any New Year, we can all pause and address where we are, but in a market that has a 90% swing in annual home construction estimation (3,000,000 homes in 2007 to 300,000 units in 2009) perspective is not just a year-end pause – it needs a lifetime.

Three “Lifers” in home design and architectural appreciation join Home Page this week: Sarah Susanka has been a thought leader in home creation, and has a vital perspective https://susanka.com/not-so-big-life/ The Pretty Good House Movement https://www.prettygoodhouse.org/ swept across our consciousness last year. And Martin Pedersen was the Executive Editor at Metropolis Magazine for 20 years and for the last years has launched The Common Edge Collaberative https://commonedge.org/ that holds a mirror to how our culture perceives design.

Rather than curse the darkness of the unknowable, a little understanding of inevitable flux in home creation might be a good thing at this time of te decade. JOIN US!
